About Tataouine
Also called the “Gateway to the Desert”, Tataouine, the city of Ksours is the hub of tourism in the southern Tunisia.
This lively city constitutes an important stage in the visit of the great Tunisian south (desert, ksours and other fortified villages).
Despite dynamic desert tours, the city retains its identity and traditional architecture. Tataouine region is also known, throughout the world, for its name, which inspired films director George Lucas in choosing the name of the planet of sands from the movie “Star Wars”.
The city is especially famous for the multitude of ksours, which date back to the 15th or the 16th century, and of which the most famous remain the Ksar Ouled Soltane and the Ksar Hadada (Star wars shooting locations).
The Berber villages located at the tops of the surrounding hills, such as Chenini, Douiret, Guermessa and Ghomrassen, also participate in the charm of this region.
The city of Tataouine organizes the annual ksour festival in March.
